INVESTING IN QUALITY
30TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES
YMC was founded in London in 1995 by Fraser Moss and Jimmy Collins. Since then, the label has established itself as one of the most enduring and influential independent brands to come out of the UK. Taking its name from a quote by the famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy; "You must create your own design style", YMC is a call to arms; one that influences the very essence of the brand's identity. Initially inspired by workwear and military clothing, the duo developed the unisex brand around the notion of creating understated and timeless garments.
GP: When was the brand founded?
FM: The brand was founded by myself & Jimmy Collins in 1995 but out the first collection came out in 96.
Why did you start designing?
The UK in the 60s,70s & 80s was a rich breeding ground for youth Culture & the correlation between music & fashion always fascinated me. However, as I couldn’t play an instrument the next best thing was designing.
What is your favourite part of the design process?
The beginning, this is when I formulate my ideas. I always have a sketch pad with me at all times & will jot down any ideas, which have been known to come in the middle of the night.
How do you define quality?
A quality garment is generally recognized through the cloth but equally important to me is the construction/make, a garment has to look as good on the inside as it does on the outside particularly if it’s unlined.
…a quality garment has to look as good on the inside as it does on the outside.
Who is your favourite author or musician?
very hard to answer this particularly with music, I’m what you might call obsessed. I’ve been a vinyl junkie since I was 12 or 13 & my record collection is housed in my garden office but spreads into my home like a shellac virus. I collect a lot of post-punk, weird electronic music & generally anything that’s coming from the left of centre. But if push came to shove I will generally reach for a Steely Dan LP, which is probably why I also like the writing of William Burroughs & Bukowski however I would have to say my favourite author is the Welsh mystic, Arthur Machen.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
My job means I never really switch off but music is a large part of my life whether I’m working or not working.
