Made in Marche: A Look at Italy's Shoemaking Region

Marche is a region of Italy on the central east coast that feels the breeze of the Adriatic Sea. World-renowned for shoemaking, this region has seen plenty of growth in past years. The region is littered with ‘calzaturifico’ or shoe factories that produce some of the world’s favourite pairs. The construction is a highly complex operation; for example, about 220 individual steps are required to make a welt-sewn shoe. Moving into the spring season, we wanted to take a deeper look at this region, explore its rich history, see inside some factories that produce our popular Italian products, and talk to the artisans who craft the shoes we love.

The region centers around The Fermo-Macerata Shoemaking District, where most factories are located. Shoe factories make up a lot of the manufacturing hub, but so does furniture making and clothing. One of the projects currently in progress is the certification and recognition of the production process. It aims to protect genuine Italian quality in the domestic and international markets so that production based on proper trade standards is given space and visibility. The companies of the footwear district work with passion, anticipate changes and create innovation, applying their craft skills to modern business culture.

Overall, gravitypope is proud to partner with businesses, family, and artisans in the Marche region, and we are lucky to be able to offer their increible product to our clientele around-the-world.

Italian brand Officine Creative was launched in 1998, producing contemporary artisan footwear. Made with hand-dyed leather, each pair of shoes goes through more than 100 processes, including authentic but meticulous techniques of washing, burnishing and dying. The result is a luxurious quality, unique to each individual product. This artisanal practice is the mantra of the brand, found in its Italian name of Officine Creative, meaning the "workshops" creative.

MOMA shoes first appeared in the international market in the 1990’s with a range of craftsmen-made footwear that was innovative and ran counter to the fashions of the day. MOMA’s “hand-made” style was based on destructured forms and “corrupted” hides, in stark contrast with the dictates of the world of fashion. Located in the Marche region of Italy, the workshop established by the brothers Gigio and Daniele Gironacci offers craftsmen, artists and designers a chance to share their creative experiences day after day.  MOMA products are steeped in emotions and evoke a lifestyle rich in experience. Dyed, worn and crumpled, MOMA shoes have become a highly fashionable and technically advanced collection of footwear.
