Myssy

The story of Myssy began when founder Janne Rauhansuu, previously a professional windsurfer, started knitting hats in 2006 during a ski season in Switzerland. Moving back to his hometown of Pöytyä, Finland in 2009, he met his wife and business partner Anna, a designer with a background of advertising. Shortly after, Myssy – the Finnish word for hat - was established. Their inspiration comes directly from Pöytyä: countryside, contradictions, and traditional craft.

Based on a farm that has remained in the family since the early 19th century, Myssy works in close cooperation with local organic sheep farms and currently has eight sheep of their own. Similar to Merino wool, Finnsheep wool is exceptionally soft, lightweight, and dense, resulting in a product that is comfortable for year-round wear. Much of their wool is hand-dyed on the farm and their designs are hand-knit by women of the local community, known as the Myssy Grannies.

With a fully traceable production model from sheep to shop, Myssy focuses on reducing wool waste and sourcing their materials locally. CEO and creative director, Anna, is a fourth-generation member of the local women’s farming association, with her contemporary designs paying homage to Finnish farming traditions. The Myssy farm also grows organic food crops, with founder Janne elected as Chairman of the Board in 2021 for The Finnish Organic Association, a group representing organic farmers in Finland.
