Marimekko
Marimekko is a Finnish design house founded in 1951 and renowned for its original prints and colours. Bringing joy and radiance to everyday life has been the lifelong mission of this playful label. Translating to "a dress for Mary," Marimekko's liberating silhouettes and distinctive colourful prints are a bold and carefree celebration of individuality.
Armi Ratia, designer and entrepreneur, began Marimekko by gathering a group of promising young artists to design new and striking fabric prints, springboarding off her experience with her husband’s textile business. Collaborating with designer Riitta Immonen, Marimekko rebelled against the restrictive fashion landscape of the time, launching their first runway show with simple flowing dresses in abstract patterns and bold colours. In the decades since, Marimekko has thrived as a fashion and lifestyle brand, continuing its culture of creative freedom and empowerment for their collective of primarily female artists.
Marimekko’s Helsinki printing factory is a “free-spirited playground of creativity” imagining new and captivating prints while staying true to the brand’s vision for optimism and joy. Striped, checked, and floral prints in bold colors make up a rich artistic legacy, holding over 3500 print designs in their collections and archives. Their bright and cheery designs have enlivened everything from dresses and bags to ceramics and furnishings, ever evolving with new and imaginative colour palettes that share the brand’s uplifting and positive message.
